National minimum wage increase

From Wednesday 1 October the National Minimum Wage (NMW) rises to £5.73 per hour for workers aged 22 and over, £4.77 for 18-21 year olds and £3.53 for those aged 16 and 17.

The NMW was introduced in April 1999 and has risen 59% since then. Last year HMRC (the enforcement body for NMW) investigated more than 4,100 employers and returned almost £3.9 million in unpaid wages to workers.

News laws will be introduced in April next year so that employers who do not pay the NMW will be subject to an automatic fine of £5,000.
