Community spirit
Shoosmiths Trainees take an active part in the CR (Corporate Responsibility) around the firm, and they also create and drive initiatives of their own. In the past year Shoosmiths trainees have run half-marathons, raced dragon boats, pushed a cake trolley round the office, dressed up in fancy dress, planted trees, collected old bicycles, and attended a film premiere – all in aid of charity. Some trainees also sit on their local office charity committee which gives them a say in deciding the kind of projects that the office gets involved in.
Induction
As we welcomed in the new trainees in September 2007 with a week of induction activities, we set them the task of creating and running some kind of charity-related project. The brief was left wide open so that they could choose to do anything. The trainees decided that rather than raise funds for a charity, they preferred to do something which would make a direct difference to people in the local community. The idea they adopted was to run a Christmas fun day at a primary school in Birmingham and a tea dance for the elderly in Basingstoke.
Helen Dickie, 1st year trainee, Age Concern Tea Dance:
“As the guests were leaving at the end of the afternoon we had some really lovely positive comments, everyone was very appreciative that we took the time to organise an event for them and said they had had a wonderful afternoon. One of the gentlemen even sent us a thank you letter!”
Sarah McQuay, 1st year trainee, primary school Christmas Fun Day:
“As part of Shoosmiths’ Corporate Social Responsibility the trainees were challenged to plan an initiative within the local community. The trainees arranged a ‘Christmas Fun Day’ at a local school where we spent the morning doing creative activities with the school children and the afternoon watching a pantomime. There was also a visit from a present-laden Father Christmas. The trainees enjoyed the day as much as the children did!”
