My time at Shoosmiths began when I started as a Paralegal, three months ahead of my training contract. I was placed in the Real Estate Department and although everyone was extremely busy, everyone was very friendly and I was quickly made to feel an important part of the team. I soon felt at ease and due to the open plan nature of the office, I found myself as comfortable talking to Partners as I did talking to the trainees.
The first week of our training contract was spent with the trainees from our other offices. This was a fantastic opportunity to meet everyone and find out that everyone had the same worries about starting their training contracts. We had a brilliant week being introduced to the firm but we were also encouraged to have fun together too!
The amount of responsibility that I have had during my time at Shoosmiths has far exceeded my expectations. In Real Estate, I was given my own files to work on and I was relied upon to progress these matters. You are also encouraged, where possible, to develop your own relationships with clients directly and by the end of my first seat I had become the first point of contact for a couple of clients which I really didn't expect to happen!
There is always something going on at Shoosmiths to get involved with! In my first year I have been involved with many charity events including; a car boot sale by the trainees, cake sales, a soup trolley and Dragon Boat racing. In relation to networking, trainees are encouraged to attend events whenever possible. The trainees in our offices are also relied upon to help organise the local networking event, New Friday, for young professionals. This is always a challenge but they are good fun and very successful.
Apart from the many fancy dress opportunities and the Shooski Ski trip, my best moment so far was completing the lease of shop for a client, which I had been involved with from start to finish, and attending their opening night event.
