Education: Oxford Brookes University (Law with Environmental Science) and OXILP (LPC)
Departments: Commercial Litigation, Real Estate, Commercial & IP, Employment
Qualifying into: Real Estate, Thames Valley
My training contract has flown by, and I am thoroughly looking forward to qualifying in September. From day 1 I have been given real work. Supervision has been excellent, and I can't stress that enough, for any future students who are looking for a role where they have both responsibility and excellent support to train and supervise them through the 2 years, Shoosmiths will be for you.
The excellent client base at Shoosmiths is one of the main attractions which first made me apply to here, and I have worked for many of them during my training contract. I have been lucky to run my own files under supervision in each of my seats. More recent highlights have included running 2 constructive unfair dismissal claims for the Employment team, and for the Real Estate team - negotiating and drafting a lease renewal and part surrender of office space over 4 floors; and negotiating and drafting a £200,000 lease surrender.
I am an active member of the Thames Valley Charity Committee. That role includes attending meetings and brainstorming for fundraising ideas and events that we run throughout the year. Previous events have included a pumpkin carving competition; a Wimbledon related quiz; and a Jubilee picnic. You are encouraged and can volunteer to take charge of events throughout the year and this helps to raise your profile within the office.
Recently the trainees in the Thames Valley office have started a quarterly Speed Networking event, with the aim of strengthening internal communication and promoting opportunities for cross referrals between teams. The first event was a speed dating scenario with the 'best speed networker' receiving a bottle of champagne.
There is lots of sporting opportunities taking place throughout the year. Cricket, netball, squash and football are among the highlights. We recently held the Shoosmiths Football Cup for clients in Reading, which will hopefully become an annual event.
Highlights for non work activities include attending the Law Careers.Net Training and Recruitment Awards at the Gherkin in London, enjoying champagne, canapés and the fantastic views!
