After completing a law module during my degree I decided that I wanted to pursue a career in law. Following the GDL at the College of Law in York, I moved south and got a job as a paralegal with Shoosmiths.
After a couple of years at Shoosmiths I began the LPC part-time at the College of Law in Birmingham while continuing to work. The experience I gained as a paralegal played a big part in me gaining a training contract and having worked at Shoosmiths previously I knew that the firm was my first choice for a training contract.
Before starting my training contract I took a year out to go travelling around the world. This was an amazing experience and something I would highly recommend to anyone if they get the chance. I feel that it has given me a much better view of the world and was great preparation for the start of my training contract.
I have been given really interesting work during my first two seats and the firm definitely values the contribution trainees make. I have had lots of client contact including conducting a face to face disclosure exercise on a large deal that we were working on.
I had a good idea what to expect from my training contract and so far I have not been disappointed. We have a really good group of trainees and everyone gets on very well. This means that the social side of things both in and out of work is really good too. The events we attend range from networking events to sporting competitions, so there is something for everyone.
