Education: De Montfort University (LLB Law, Legal Practice Course)
Department: Commercial - Client Secondment
Coming out of University and looking for my first job with a law firm was a daunting proposition. However, growing up in Northampton (where it all began), Shoosmiths was always going to be at the top of my list.
I got my foot in the door with a role as a paralegal in Shoosmith's award winning Asset Finance Department. I have experienced life working for some of the firm's biggest clients, dealing with often challenging complex matters and having a lot of direct contact with the parties, including our client's customers and the Court. The skills I have developed as a paralegal, together with those gained whilst on secondment with an Asset Finance client, have been integral in my progression within the firm and ultimately leading to me obtaining a training contract.
My team and supervisors have always been very encouraging and supportive towards me building "my brand" inside and outside of the firm. In doing so, I have participated in some incredibly rewarding and enjoyable events which fell outside of my specific role. This has ranged from being the chairperson of the Northampton office's charity committee, paddling a dragon boat down the River Nene, to running out on the pitches at Twickenham for a charity touch rugby tournament.
This all led to me applying for a training contract through the firm's internal application route; which was and still remains a pretty popular option in light of the huge competition for training contract places. For me, it involved my application being supported by both the head of Asset Finance and Head of the Recovery Services practice group, following this undertaking an internal secondment to assess my work in a different environment and area of law, all culminating with an intense but surprisingly enjoyable assessment day.
Since starting as a trainee, my first seat has seen me on secondment with one of our large commercial clients. Whilst at first the broad areas of work involved initially seemed like a lot to deal with, the support I have been given from Shoosmiths has been invaluable and allowed me to feel comfortable and able to add value to the client. I look forward to continuing my journey with Shoosmiths and seeing which areas I get to experience and get stuck into next.
