After doing my research and feeling confident in the knowledge that Shoosmiths was the firm for me, I made sure I attended every possible event that they were a part of. From law fairs to insight evenings, I was able to meet many representatives of the firm. It really had an impact on me just how relatable these individuals were; no stuffiness or hierarchy, just friendly, professional people.
After submitting my training contract application and attending a (surprisingly) rather enjoyable assessment day, I received the unbeatable phone call letting me know I was being offered a training contract at Shoosmiths!
With two years ahead of me prior to commencing my training contract, I completed the Legal Practice Course and then started as a paralegal in the corporate team in the Birmingham office. Paralegalling prior to my training contract was one of the best decisions I made. I was exposed to some challenging and rewarding work, and was given the responsibility to manage various matters and engage with clients directly. I wasn't handheld, yet the support was there if I needed it. Following a wonderful year in a great team, I couldn't wait to start my training contract and experience another challenge.
Part of my first seat was spent on secondment at Jaguar Land Rover. I had never had exposure to commercial legal work before, so this certainly gives an idea of the confidence Shoosmiths has in their people! Whilst understandably daunting at first, I quickly got into the swing of things and I was soon liaising with people all over the world and negotiating contracts.
Shoosmiths are big advocates of a 'work life balance' and place great importance on life outside of the office. We have an enthusiastic charity and social committee, who are on top of organising things from social drinks to the legendary Christmas Family Day. We have regular quizzes and plenty of trolleys taking goodies round the office to raise money for the office and national charities.
It feels good to be part of a firm where its culture and values really do stand out, and I look forward to progressing my career with Shoosmiths.
