My first encounter with Shoosmiths was through a careers event at university. I wanted some interview practice and met with Sam Hope, Graduate Recruitment Manager. I was struck by how friendly and down to earth she was. Sam helped me with my CV and interview techniques and encouraged me to apply for the training contract. I am glad she did, as I was successful in getting through to the assessment centre.

When I was invited to the assessment centre, I was asked to prepare a presentation on the values of the firm. The more I looked into their values I saw what set Shoosmiths apart from other firms, which made them a more attractive firm. From working at Shoosmiths I can see that they run the firm in line with their values on a daily basis and appreciate that they aren't afraid to do things differently. Treating both their clients and their employees with respect and an understanding of the challenges they face. I thought their approach of looking beyond candidates academic records through blind interviewing was impressive, meaning they could look to those who fit the firm rather than those who simply had the best results.

I was ecstatic when I got the call to tell me that Shoosmiths were offering me a training contract. The offer helped to motivate me through my final two years at university. I thought it was great that the firm organised future trainee events throughout those years where I could go along and meet with the current trainees and my future co-workers. When I attended one after I was recruited, I felt so welcomed and like I was part of the firm already.

The trainee induction week just further emphasised that we are regarded as an important part of the firm and the whole trainee group provide great support to one another.

I am now a couple of months into my training contract and my first seat in commercial real estate in Edinburgh. I had an interest in property law through university and I am really enjoying the seat. The team are very friendly and are always happy to take the time to answer questions and explain anything I don't understand. I love that Shoosmiths' values aren't just talk, they are put into practice across the firm on a daily basis, making them a great firm to train with.
