The quality of training, the calibre of work and the ethos of the firm are what initially attracted me to Shoosmiths. That was almost 4 years ago and luckily, the reality has matched my expectations!
During my Corporate and Commercial Property seats I assisted the teams on a variety of interesting projects with various levels of complexity, different challenges and sometimes almost daunting levels of responsibility. Whilst I knew I could call on help whenever needed, I was encouraged to use my initiative and the experience I gained during that time was fantastic.
Personal highlights from these first two seats include acting for a leading British fashion brand upon investment in their company by a US based venture capital firm and being involved in a number of high profile property acquisitions and investment disposals across the UK. But it was the brilliant level of responsibility and direct client contact that made these interesting deals really exciting as you are relied on as a trainee to take ownership for your work.
One of my personal goals during my training contract was to gain exposure to a broader range of work and to experience working within a new organisation through a client secondment. My 6 months working within a FTSE 250 company has given me just that experience, plus it has allowed me to see what is expected from an advisor from an in-house perspective, which has been a particularly insightful and valuable experience.
However my favourite thing about my training so far has been the support I have received and that, as a trainee, you are always seen as a valuable member of the team.
Outside the office, there is always something going on! Shoosmiths encourages everyone to get involved in corporate responsibility (CR) initiatives and attend local networking events. On the CR side, I have really enjoyed being a member of our local charity committee and have co-ordinated a number of events including an external Krispy Kreme sale, raising over £700 for one of our local charities, DePaul UK.
I have gained a huge amount during my training at Shoosmiths - taking on genuine responsibility, developing a broad spectrum of experience and beginning to build my own network in and out of the firm - but one of the most exciting aspects of training and working here is that Shoosmiths is actively focused on growth and sees investment in its people as key.
