Belfast is Northern Ireland's capital city and is seen as a centre for industry, as well as the arts, higher education, business, and law.
Boosted by increasing numbers of tourists, a number of cultural quarters were developed. The Cathedral Quarter hosts a yearly visual and performing arts festival. The Gaeltacht Quarter promotes and encourages the use of the Irish language. The Queen's Quarter is named after Queen's University and hosts the annual Belfast Festival at Queen's each autumn. Finally, the Titanic Quarter promises to transform some former shipyard land adjacent to Belfast Harbour into 'one of the largest waterfront developments in Europe'. Plans include apartments, a riverside entertainment district, and a major Titanic-themed museum.
Belfast has become a popular film location; The Paint Hall at Harland and Wolff has become one of the UK Film Council's main studios. Shows filmed there include the film City of Ember and HBO's Game of Thrones series.
In November 2011, Belfast became the smallest city to host the MTV Europe Music Awards.
