Leeds is a city in West Yorkshire and is the largest legal and financial centre in the UK outside London, playing host to the northern/regional offices of more than 30 national and international banks.
The extensive retail area of Leeds is identified as the principal regional shopping centre for the whole of the Yorkshire and the Humber region, offering well over 1,000 retail stores within a number of indoor shopping centres in the heart of the City. The newest of these shopping centres opened in October 2016, Victoria Gate, which houses a flagship John Lewis store, the largest outside London. 75 per cent of the stores that opened in Victoria Gate were new to Leeds with many of those stores being the first outside of London.
Leeds is known for its culture in the fields of art, architecture, music, sport, film and television. It has produced many of the UK's most notable artists and sculptors, including Kenneth Armitage, John Atkinson Grimshaw, Jacob Kramer, Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and Edward Wadsworth.
The city has a strong sporting heritage, with the Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Leeds Rhinos (the rugby league team) and Yorkshire Carnegie (the rugby union team) playing at Headingley Stadium, and Leeds United A.F.C. playing at Elland Road. The Headquarters of the Rugby Football League is based in Leeds.
