"The firm's national footprint was further strengthened by the arrival of Karen Savage & Paula Swain to the sizeable team in May 2016, to establish a practice in the firm's Southampton office."
Karen is a Partner in Shoosmiths’ Recoveries Services Group (RSG) and leads the Commercial Recoveries Team in England.
She has more than two decades’ experience in commercial recoveries and insolvency litigation. She acts for UK and international clients in a broad range of sectors from construction to distribution, with a particular focus on financial services, including fintech, utilities, debt purchase, trade credit and credit insurance.
A previous winner of Credit Today’s Litigation Specialist of the Year, Karen is described by a client as “very commercial, extremely client focused and easy to get on with.”
Karen's recent experience includes:-
- Insourcing a book of 3,500 accounts from a client's previous panel firm. Designing and developing the processes to support the work without compromising service to the client or their customers.
- Acting for a group of investors to seek recovery of substantial sums in excess of £1.5m invested in what was discovered to be an international Ponzi scheme fraud. Her strategy included pursuing a bank based in Switzerland, for its failures to identify the fraud and a highly favourable negotiated settlement was reached for the investors.
- Advising a major Spanish milk product producer who manufactured and distributed their goods through a number of third party suppliers in Europe. Karen defended a claim brought against the Client for £2.5 m for breach of contract with their UK distributor. The claim was heard in the Commercial Court in Birmingham and ultimately resolved through mediation.
Where Karen can particularly help clients is in using her wide experience to advise them on the best strategy to maximise recoveries in the most cost effective way . Karen takes time to fully understand her Client’s business, their objectives and priorities, identifying ways to add value and improve processes to ensure clients received maximum benefit from the business relationship.
Karen has worked with clients in designing and implementing a full outsourcing model - which included credit control, collections, litigation and insolvency. Her experience covers, ledger data cleansing, account segmentation, collections, litigation, insolvency and complex litigation.
She is accustomed to briefing boards and training credit teams and is a regular contributor to credit management publications.
Karen qualified as a Solicitor in 1996 and joined Shoosmiths in May 2016. She is a Fellow of ILEX, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Credit Management and an alumni of Bournemouth University (LPC – Commendation). Karen obtained a Masters in Law at Guildford College of Law.

“I have such confidence in Karen and her team that I asked her to take over several thousand cases from an ex panel firm. Karen and her team maintained both service levels and quality, whilst maintaining regulatory compliance” - Collections Manager, Motor Finance March 2017
“During a tender process, Karen was the only lawyer to provide a truly innovative pricing structure. Such was the strength of the pricing proposal, we asked all firms remaining on the panel to follow it. We have also recently taken this idea and followed the principles with other business partners.” - Panel Manager, Motor Finance April 2017
