Paul is an experienced commercial litigator and works closely with in-house lawyers, executive directors and other senior managers of large corporates and equivalent businesses. He advises on a wide variety of commercial and contractual matters, including disputes involving: professional negligence, corporate investigations, breach of warranty, product liability, retention of title, shareholders' disputes, tracing, breach of confidence and numerous other types of dispute, frequently involving foreign jurisdictions.

His style is to quickly assimilate the issues in dispute in order to identify a cost-effective strategy to resolve those issues, whether that be through litigation or some other form of dispute resolution.

Recent work handled by Paul includes advising:

  • the global market leader in the logistics industry in respect of a multi-million pound dispute. The claim related to losses incurred as a result of alleged breaches of confidence, arising out of the procurement of a large-scale distribution contract;
  • a major car manufacturer and distributor in relation to monies owed following the termination of a Distribution Agreement with one of its European importers;
  • acting for a large plc manufacturer and supplier of drinks in its dispute with a global professional services firm, in which the plc alleged professional negligence against the consultancy claiming in excess of £80m in damages;
  • a leading, global entertainment enterprise in relation to various disputes including a £9m claim for the unlawful termination of a pan-European credit insurance contract.
    Earlier in his career, Paul completed a 6-month secondment for a large plc.

Whilst on secondment, Paul worked closely with various business units in order to avoid or manage disputes and addressed numerous commercial issues that arose. Work included advising on a complex telecommunications fraud, breach of contract relating to satellite licenses and a multi-million pound VAT recovery.

Paul forms part of the firm’s team focussed on presenting and running interactive sessions for in-house lawyers for many of Shoosmiths’ major clients. He has chaired and developed the content and structure for those client forums.
