Samantha is a member of the Planning Team based in the Manchester office. She has experience of advising on all aspects of planning and highways law, together with the law relating to compulsory acquisition and compensation.

Samantha acts for public sector organisations, including local planning authorities, and private developers in connection with the various stages of the consenting process, with a particular expertise in the renewable energy sector and, primarily, the promotion of onshore and offshore wind farm projects.

Samantha advises clients in relation to planning applications which are being determined locally, together with those which are the subject of an appeal or those which have been called in or recovered by the Secretary of State for his own determination. Samantha has also acted on a number of planning focused judicial review and statutory High Court challenges.

Samantha’s recent work highlights include the following:

  • Acting for REG Windpower Limited on its planning application for a 4 turbine extension to a consented wind farm scheme in Thorney, Peterborough which is currently under construction.  The planning application for the proposed extension has been called in by the Secretary of State for his own determination and a local public inquiry will take place shortly to determine whether planning permission should be granted.
  • Advising a national solar farm developer on its proposal to construct a large-scale solar farm in southern England.  Planning permission for the solar farm was granted on appeal; however, this decision was the subject of a legal challenge in the High Court. Samantha acted in connection with the settlement of these proceedings, thereby allowing development at the site to proceed.
  • Advising Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council on the compulsory purchase order to facilitate the regeneration of the Town Centre and, in particular, to assemble the land required to deliver a retail led, mixed use scheme comprising a leading supermarket retailer and a cinema and leisure complex.

Samantha joined Shoosmiths in January 2015 having spent 9 years post-qualification, together with her training contract, at Eversheds.

Samantha regularly speaks at internal and external seminars aimed at public sector and private developer clients. She also delivers training for the RTPI.
