Shoosmiths wins role in creating 21st century Wolverhampton

28 July 2008

Shoosmiths is to offer wide ranging advice to the organisation formed to transform Wolverhampton into a successful 21st century city.

The national law firm has been selected to act as one of the legal advisers to Wolverhampton Development Company (WDC).

It will deliver advice on regeneration and sustainability, investment, public private partnerships, special purchase and local asset-backed vehicles, environmental issues, planning law and intellectual property.

Partner and head of Birmingham office Joel Kordan will lead a team comprising partner and head of Shoosmiths’ national planning group Iain Gilbey, and associates and commercial property specialists Ranjit Bassey and Lesley Servian.

Established in 2007, WDC is working with public and private sectors partners to act as a catalyst for ‘growth, investment and aspiration’ in Wolverhampton.

Formed by Advantage West Midlands, Wolverhampton City Council and English Partnerships, it aims to attract and grow businesses and create 30,000 new jobs by 2031, and pull in more than £340m of private sector investment.

Development opportunities include a technology-based business park, £300m retail and leisure scheme, and mixed-use projects based on the city’s bus and railway stations.

Kordan said: “Our depth of knowledge in all the areas WDC requires advice means we’re well placed to deliver. Couple that with our local knowledge, and we’re an excellent fit.

“And it’s hugely exciting to be part of something that is seeking to turn Wolverhampton into an ‘urban centre for the 21st century’, and in doing so, creating a better life for the people who live there.”

WDC development director Will Evans said: “Our aim is to improve the pace, scale and quality of growth opportunities in Wolverhampton to create a better quality of life for people in the city. An ambitious, forward thinking initiative like this, which will positively affect the lives of thousands of people, requires the best legal advice, and we believe we now have that.”
