Shoosmiths helps highlight spinal injury support work

24 September 2008

Shoosmiths has attended the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) Black Pearl Dinner, held to raise funds, and awareness of the SIA.

The event at The Belfry, near Birmingham, included a talk by SIA training officer Jonathon Fogerty, and video footage of the work it does.

An average three people a day have an accident or injury that results in permanent paralysis due to spinal cord damage, and it is estimated there are 40,000 people in the UK with spinal cord injuries.

The SIA was set up in 1974 to support people with spinal injuries and their families, by providing help and information.

Sara Hunt, head of personal injury at Shoosmiths’ Birmingham office, said: “The effects of these injuries can be devastating, and the work done by the SIA is invaluable in helping to support and rehabilitate those affected.”

Fellow personal injury lawyer Barbara Woodbridge, from the national law firm’s Northampton office, also attended the dinner: “It was good to see so many people supporting this worthwhile organisation through this event. The work done by the SIA cannot be underestimated.”

Road traffic accidents and sporting activities are two common causes of spinal cord injuries.

Shoosmiths is listed in the SIA Solicitors’ Directory, and has a specialist team handling spinal cord cases in Birmingham, Northampton and Basingstoke.
