New face of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award found at Shoosmiths

30 October 2008

A solicitor from national law firm Shoosmiths has been selected by youth charity, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) to become one of the faces of its new brand.

Monica Kapur, a member of the firm’s Birmingham restructuring and insolvency team, headed up by partner James Keates, was chosen from hundreds of applicants to represent the organisation.

The charity was established in 1956 and is dedicated to the personal development of young people from all backgrounds.  With the widest reach of any UK youth charity, over 275,000 young people (more than 30,000 of whom are from disadvantaged backgrounds) undertake inspiring DofE programmes to achieve Gold, Silver or Bronze DofE Awards every year.

Newsletters were sent to all Gold DofE Award holders asking them to apply for the position as one of the new faces for their new brand relaunch, which took place in September this year.

Monica said: “When I read the letter I wasn’t quite sure whether to apply or not.  But after some consideration I decided to throw caution to the wind and just went for it, not expecting to hear anything else.

“DofE later informed me that I’d been selected and I genuinely couldn’t believe it.  Shoosmiths were very supportive and gave me the day off so I could have my photo taken.

“I’ve been involved with the DofE for the last seven years and over that time, have achieved my Bronze, Sliver and Gold Awards, which has opened up so many windows of opportunity for me.

“Completing my DofE proved to me that any dream or goal is possible, regardless of your culture, gender, race or religion, so long as you put your mind to it.  I’d recommend it to anyone.”

Head of Shoosmiths’ Birmingham office, partner Joel Kordan said:  “We are incredibly proud of Monica and what she’s achieved.  She’s a real asset to the firm, her team and now the DofE, and we will continue to support her excellent efforts in any way we can.”
