Mother and daughter exit family firm after 23 years

20 February 2009

Shoosmiths has helped the mother and daughter founders of a day care nursery chain sell their shares, 23 years after starting the business.

Specialists across four disciplines acted for Sylvia and Julia Cox in the sale of Kingsclere Nurseries Limited shares for an undisclosed amount.

Established as a family business in 1986 with single premises, Wokingham-based, Kingsclere, now runs seven day care nurseries across Berkshire for children aged 0-5.

It has been bought by Complete Childcare, with outside investment from funds managed by Downing Corporate Finance Limited.

Shoosmiths’ six-strong team was led by partner and head of corporate finance in the south, Sean Wright and included: Jayne Fearn, associate and Ben Skelton, solicitor (both corporate); Peter Swinburn, associate (commercial property); Stuart Hale, associate (corporate and banking, who advised on tax matters) and Gwynneth Tan, associate (employment).

Thames Valley solicitors Charles Lucas & Marshall acted for the buyer. The firm’s four-strong team was led by Tom Walker, solicitor (corporate); Andrew Egan, solicitor (employment); Karen Jenkins, trainee solicitor (corporate); and Malcolm Poynter, partner (commercial property).

Solicitors Dickinson Dees acted for the investors.

The sale brings to an end the family's 23-year involvement with Kingsclere, during which it built up a successful business with a large property portfolio.
