Deafness Awareness Week: 4-10 May

01 May 2009

Deafness awareness week aims to improve the understanding of different types of deafness and to highlight different communication methods used by the deaf, such as sign language and lip reading.

Supported by more than 100 deafness charities and organisations under the umbrella of the UK Council on Deafness, there are local events across the country during the week long campaign.

It also aims to promote the huge range of local organisations that support deaf people, their family, and friends.

There can be many causes of deafness, and Shoosmiths’ Occupational Disease Team handles cases in which people have been deafened as a result of exposure to excessive levels of noise at work without adequate – or in some cases any – hearing protection.

Deafness can be the result of prolonged exposure to noise, or to just short bursts of very high level noise.

Associate Sara Hunt said: “A deaf person can become very isolated.

“I have acted for many clients who avoid mixing with others because they are embarrassed that they cannot follow conversations because of their hearing difficulties.

“It is why Deafness Awareness Week, which highlights help available to the deaf, is so important.”
