Safeguarding development projects in a post-crunch economy
01 July 2009
Shoosmiths, Allsop LLP and Barton Willmore have co-hosted a breakfast briefing aimed at developers and investors, examining ways to preserve development projects in a post-crunch economy.
Planning specialists Iain Gilbey from Shoosmiths, Matt Wisbey from Allsop LLP; and Barton Willmore’s Iain Painting, provided essential intelligence to more than 130 attendees on:
- how to find value from the planning process in the present market
- strategies for new development structures that can deliver excellent returns, even with an uncertain future
- legal mechanisms that balance local authorities’ political and economic obligations and bring them back to the negotiating table
- cost and benefit techniques demonstrating how the value of the site can increase with each planning/legal move
The event was held at The Commonwealth Club, London.
Gilbey said: “Development projects negotiated in a once buoyant market are now exposing dangerous weaknesses, so much so that all parties to the development process have had to adapt significantly.
“This briefing has managed to bring together key experts in the industry to give attendees essential guidance on how best to bring development projects forward and preserve and enhance their viability".
Iain Painting of Barton Willmore, added: “It is crucial at this time that we look at ways to make new development strategies more efficient and cost effective and working closely with other consultants to debate and share ideas is an important part of this. By pooling our knowledge and expertise we will be better placed to understand the challenges currently facing development appraisals and look at some practical solutions.”
