Asbestos exposure concerns after factory fire

13 October 2009

Fire investigators say asbestos may have been released into the environment following a factory fire at the Hawthorns Trading Estate, in Smethwick, West Midlands.

Residents living near the Monty’s Tropical Rags factory were warned to shut their windows and stay inside, roads were closed, and trains were prevented from stopping at Smethwick station.

People are at risk from asbestos only when it is disturbed and the fibres become airborne. It is believed there was asbestos in the building.

Sara Hunt, solicitor and asbestos specialist at national law firm Shoosmiths, said: “I can understand that people may be worried about being exposed to asbestos as a result of this fire.

“However, I would reassure people that not everyone exposed to asbestos will necessarily develop an asbestos related illness. Anyone who is concerned should seek advice and reassurance from their GP.”
