Shoosmiths Manchester expansion gathers momentum
07 November 2008
Within weeks of announcing plans to open in Manchester, Shoosmiths has made two further appointments, taking the team launching the new office in January next year to nine.
The latest joiners advise lenders on mortgage shortfall recoveries, a niche service which will complement Shoosmiths existing strength in mortgage finance services.
Sean Adams joins as national head of mortgage shortfall recoveries. Sean is a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives and is currently heading up mortgage shortfall recoveries at HL Interactive LLP. Moving across with him from HL Interactive LLP is executive team leader Ray Keeling.
Mortgage shortfall recovery is the collection of any deficit in repayment of the mortgage after sale of a property following repossession. The team will report into Shoosmiths national head of collections, Gill Payne and utilise specialised collections and litigation strategies to recover the shortfall debt.
These appointments follow Shoosmiths earlier announcement that it is expanding the firm's capability in mortgage recoveries work with the appointment of Darren Shaw, former head of mortgage repossessions at HL Interactive LLP in Manchester, who will be joined by four senior managers at the new office.
Commenting on the latest appointments, Waine Mannix, partner and national head of Shoosmiths lender services, said:
“Mortgage Shortfall Recoveries is an extremely specialist area and we are delighted that the new team is joining us because their skills complement the expanded repossession litigation service which we are establishing in Manchester with the appointment of Darren Shaw and the services which we already offer in our teams in Northampton and Birmingham.
“Our move into the Manchester market is attracting a lot of attention in the legal and finance markets and we've had plenty of approaches from people who want to be a part of our new venture.
“Our lender services team has an excellent reputation. Sean and Ray wanted to be a part of that success and are looking forward to joining Darren and their other colleagues in January.”
Mannix will oversee the initial development phase of the Manchester office as well as the lender services team which is expecting to achieve a year on year growth of 25%.
As well as being Shoosmiths first office in the North West, the Manchester move also launches a new business stream with the recruitment of DLA Piper legal director, Harold Brako who specialises in receivables finance litigation & recoveries.
The new office is Shoosmiths' eighth UK location and is announced five years after the successful opening of its Birmingham office, which has grown from a team of eight to employ over 160. Earlier this year, Partner Jo Davis and a team of four from BPE Solicitors joined the Birmingham office, expanding the national reach of Shoosmiths' lender services team.
