Environment
The Buncefield and BP Deepwater Horizon disasters are two clear examples of how an environmental incident can severely affect a company’s reputation by attracting high profile negative publicity, massive clean up costs, and decimation of share price.
Businesses are increasingly failing to spot the thresholds at which a number of environmental regulations ‘bite’ as they grow. As a result, they fall foul of technical environmental legislation and commit criminal offences that can go unnoticed for years, resulting in higher penalties.
More restrictive requirements implemented by complex EU regulations and the Government’s binding obligations to hit environmental targets have meant environmental compliance is becoming even more of a minefield for companies.
Our team has a successful track record of working with clients, the Environment Agency and other stakeholders on environmental issues to prevent enforcement action being taken.
Shoosmiths has a dedicated Environmental Law Group comprising specialist legal advisers which provides national coverage to clients, drawn from across our legal disciplines. This enables us to bring our sectoral, commercial and legal expertise together for clients so that we can deal with the specialist needs of your business.
We have the expertise to assist with matters such as contaminated land issues; nuisance and flooding claims; risk apportionment; advice on land acquisitions and disposals; and corporate due diligence. We can also assist you with:
