Vision

Our approach to recruitment and people management is underpinned by our Equality and Diversity strategy. Our ambition is to have a workforce that reflects our local communities. We are committed to making positive changes to help our people shine at each stage of their career.

We are building a diverse workforce where individuals are recognised for their talent and contribution rather than their gender, sexual orientation, marital status, race, nationality, ethnic origin, disability, age, pregnancy, maternity, paternity, or religious belief. This is why equality, diversity and inclusion is an essential part of the induction process upon joining the firm.

We believe that there is no one method of implementing equality and diversity 'good practice' and it is something that will continue to evolve. Our Equality and Diversity strategy will help us to meet our clients' sector tendering requirements for equality, reduce the risk of legal challenge to our business and enable us to fully reap the benefits that an inclusive approach to management brings.

As a founding signatory of the Law Society's Diversity and Inclusion Charter, we actively support initiatives to attract and welcome minority groups into the legal profession. We partner with groups such as Aspiring Solicitors, Birmingham Black Lawyers, Women's Aid, the Prince's Responsible Business Network, Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic (BAME) majority schools and schools in social mobility coldspots. We are also signatories of the Social Mobility Pledge and the Race At Work Charter.

Impact

Ranking in the top five for female partners in the Diversity League Table, and appearing in the top 10 for the third year running, is a success story. We already boast a near 40% female partnership and are striving for better.

Shoosmiths has achieved significant recognition for encouraging diversity in the legal profession, being the first UK legal practice to gain a Gold standard Equality Assured Recruitment (EQA) accreditation, holding Gold status in the Law Society’s Diversity and Inclusion Charter and topping the Black Solicitors Network Diversity League Table three times.

We can measure our success via the applications we receive, and who we recruit. But for us it's not about percentages, we recognise that work in this area will be ongoing and we know that our continued success depends on our people and their talent, ambition, creativity and drive.
