Do you regard your business as small, large or mid size?
If you have a turnover of £10m - £300m you are mid size, but as there is no formal classification for mid size business (MSB) in the UK, many directors of MSBs self-identify as small or large.
This is one of the findings in the 2019 UK Mid Size Business Leadership Study, a national study of circa. 480 directors of UK directors, sponsored by Shoosmiths. The study also reveals a significant ‘support gap’ for this crucial tier of UK business.
Statistics show there are around 30,000 MSBs in the United Kingdom
MSBs are typically too big to benefit from the incentives aimed at SMEs (classified by less than 250 employees) and yet they are too small to attract the attention afforded to FTSE companies.
Currently, there is no formal classification for mid size businesses and this contributes to a ‘forgotten middle’ in UK business, with the boards of businesses that have exceeded the headcount to comprise a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) struggling to find support and resources tailored for their size and stage of development.
