Shoosmiths' Banking team boosts project finance capability with strategic partner hire

National law firm Shoosmiths LLP has strengthened its Banking & Finance team with the appointment as a partner of project and real estate finance heavyweight, Nick Iliff.

Iliff is an acknowledged expert in project finance, having advised a wide range of lenders, borrowers and public bodies on the financing of infrastructure, energy and mining projects both in the UK and internationally for more than two decades.

Additionally, he has considerable experience in real estate finance work, acting for bank, funder, developer and investor clients on the acquisition, refinancing and restructuring of assets, covering everything from individual properties to multi-jurisdictional portfolios of assets.

This recruitment is part of Shoosmiths' strategy to develop its banking and finance capability in the UK, and providing a key building block in the further development of its projects, energy and infrastructure practice.

Nick Iliff joins Shoosmiths from Gowling WLG, where he had led the Project Finance team since 2011. Before that, he was Head of UK Project Finance at Pinsent Masons for four years, preceded by a decade at DLA Piper in real estate finance and project finance roles.

At Shoosmiths, he will be working from the firm's Birmingham office alongside banking partner David Adams to develop the real estate finance practice, adding a powerful tier of services to the firm's established real estate investor and developer client base.

He will also be powering up Shoosmiths' Projects, Energy and Infrastructure practice, spearheaded by partner James Wood Robertson, who joined Shoosmiths from DLA Piper in 2017.

Rebecca Mauleverer, head of Shoosmiths' Banking & Finance team, said: "We are delighted that Nick has chosen to join us at the time when we are set to take our banking and finance capability to the next level.

"Nick's arrival will accelerate our drive to develop market share in line with Shoosmiths' wider ambitions to be seen as the UK's leading law firm."

Nick Iliff said: "Everything I see and hear about Shoosmiths tells me this is a firm that is on the move, full of talent and drive. I have been impressed by the strong client base of the firm as well as by the ambition and collegiality of everyone I've met here.

"I'm very much looking forward to working collaboratively with the team and the wider partner group and playing my part in delivering the firm's next exciting chapter of growth."

Shoosmiths has recently been named Law Firm of the Year in the Legal Business Awards 2018.
