Shoosmiths has hired a new partner to strengthen its intellectual property (IP) offering.

The national law firm has appointed Stuart Malcolm, a specialist IP lawyer with a strong focus on the UK's science, technology and innovation sectors; and the knowledge-based and creative economies.

Partner and national head of IP Gary Assim said: "Stuart helps clients innovate and succeed through the exploitation of their intellectual and creative assets, which is a key area of our work.

"Having previously founded his own practice, Stuart demonstrates an entrepreneurial spirit combined with absolute commitment and a determination to succeed, something so often seen in our own clients' make-up.

"It is this freshness of approach and sector specialism that makes him and his practice such a perfect dovetail fit for Shoosmiths' IP offering."

Dual-qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales, and in Scotland, Malcolm will be based primarily at Shoosmiths' Reading office. He will also advise his clients in Scotland and help develop ACH Shoosmiths, in Edinburgh.

Assim added: "Both the Thames Valley and Edinburgh are part of the UK's principal enterprise clusters, and share a rich entrepreneurial spirit and international reputation for innovation.

Malcolm said: "Shoosmiths has consistently maintained its reputation as a leading legal adviser in the field of exploitation and protection of intellectual assets. This sector expertise and client commitment means we're ideally placed to help clients promote and accelerate their unique educational, research, intellectual and business assets, whilst exploiting the opportunities that characterise the knowledge economy."
