The Responsible Business Awards are the UK's longest-running and most respected corporate responsibility awards set up to champion and raise awareness of the best examples from across the UK of business making a positive difference. The Local Impact Awards specifically celebrate companies and individuals who are creating local impact in their community, through initiatives such as volunteering and inspiring young people with work placements.

Shoosmiths achieved the Local Impact award in the South East in recognition of pro bono, volunteering and fundraising activities undertaken by staff at the firm's Milton Keynes office, thus illustrating how it has engaged employees across the business to make volunteering culturally normal. Legal advice is provided on a pro bono basis to charities and individuals unable to afford to pay legal fees. In addition, colleagues are able to spend a day per year volunteering in the local Milton Keynes community. A long standing relationship with Milton Keynes Community Foundation has resulted in colleagues raising nearly £20,000 since 2000 to help local charities.

Commenting, Nicola Ellen, CR consultant at Shoosmiths, said: 'The approach of our Milton Keynes office typifies the efforts staff make across all our offices. I feel priviliged to be part of a firm where so many people want to make a voluntary contribution to their local communities and so deliver the wider corporate responsibility goals set out in our business plan.'

Shoosmiths was presented with the local impact award at the Thames Valley Responsible Business Awards Showcase on the 10 June at Unipart House, Oxford.

Commenting, Stephen Howard, Business in the Community's Chief Executive said: 'All year round forward thinking, responsible businesses and exceptional individuals in the South East make a significant and valuable contribution to society, working towards developing more resilient communities, stimulating local economies, creating diverse, skilled and healthy workforces and addressing skills shortages. Our Local Impact Award achievers are at the heart of driving genuine change within local communities. I congratulate Shoosmiths for this achievement. We hope their example will inspire many more businesses in the South East to put responsible behaviour at the heart of how they do business.'
