Birmingham Disabled Professionals – The Launch

Thursday 21 September 2017 saw the launch of Birmingham Disabled Professionals at Bar Opus!

Shoosmiths lawyer, Iyanu Onalaja, and partner at the Wisdom Factory CIC, Sarah Rennie, (both pictured above) led a dynamic discussion on what it means to a be disabled individual pursuing highly competitive careers.

For a completely new initiative that’s aimed at a rare and often under-encouraged audience, the launch was well attended and stimulated exciting conversation.

Sarah says: “The event was a great success! Iyanu and I already know the steps we need to take before our next meeting on 25th January 2018 in order to encourage disabled professionals to join this innovative network.”

Iyanu and Sarah will be writing monthly blog posts on adapting in the workplace, so please be on the lookout for their LinkedIn and Facebook page Birmingham Disabled Professionals.

Their next event will be held on 25th January 2018 at the same venue, so there is plenty of time to spread the message and get in touch.

Iyanu adds: “The thought of setting up a disabled professionals group was quite daunting especially as from a young age I’ve always tried to think of my disability as distinct from myself. However, now that we’ve launched I’m positive that it will not only be of use to me but also others who are looking to share in a safe environment and become a voice in an underrepresented community in the professional landscape.”

Both Iyanu and Sarah are looking forward to welcoming you at their next event in January.
