Ed is a Partner in Shoosmiths' Commercial practice, joining in October 2021.

Trained as a corporate lawyer at Pinsents, then moving to Freshfields, and then having worked in-house for 20 years, 10 of those years as General Counsel Telefonica UK (O2, giffgaff, Tesco Mobile, CTIL) with a seat on the board, Ed is a vastly experienced lawyer with a unique business acumen.

Ed has extensive expertise in M&A, JVs, outsourcing, technology agreements, MVNO agreements, lobbying, telecommunications regulation, consumer law, risk management, large scale litigation, white collar crime, national security matters and complex commercial and regulatory disputes. 

Notably Ed is the lawyer who negotiated with Apple the deal for the iPhone’s introduction to the UK and Ireland in 2007, a deal that changed the mobile industry fundamentally.  He also personally negotiated the network sharing deal between Telefonica UK and Vodafone that led to the network sharing JV now incorporated as CTIL.  Most recently he played a leading role in the creation of Virgin Media O2, the JV formed by Liberty Global and Telefonica UK, valued at £31bn.
