Virtual planning committees – regulations now in force

Last week we commented on the draft new regulations which the government was going to introduce which would allow local authorities to hold virtual planning committee meetings. They’re now in force.

The Local Authorities and Police and Crime Panels (Coronavirus) (Flexibility of Local Authority and Police and Crime Panel Meetings) (England and Wales) Regulations 2020 have now come into force (as of 4 April 2020).

The key provisions concerning virtual planning committees are found in Regulation 5. They mirror those which were contained in the draft regulations. The provisions apply solely to England, with only that part of the regulations concerning police and crime panel meetings applying to both England and Wales.

It therefore remains to be seen whether the Welsh ministers will introduce similar regulations for Wales in due course.
